1962 Factory Double Cab Pickup Type 2 Resto-Mod Subaru 2.5L
It was once said that greatness is all in the details, and this Volkswagen Type 265 Double Cab Pickup is an ocean of details. Much more than just a restoration, this Volkswagen is powered by a 2.5L/175 HP SOHC Subaru engine with electronic fuel injection built by Outfront Motorsports in Buena Park, California. The engine is kept cool by two aluminum radiators that were fabricated by Scott's Best Radiator in Hays, Kansas, complete with custom shrouding and fans. Among all the details of the highly detailed engine are custom stainless steel dual exhausts with high-performance coating by Jet-Hot of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Power is channeled to the rear wheels via a Freeway Flyer transmission, and grip is courtesy of 215-45-17 Nexen radial tires wrapping 7x17-inch polished aluminum Porsche 911-style 5-lug wheels from California Import Parts, Ltd. The chassis is fitted with rack-and-pinion steering, adjustable spring plates, front and rear disc brakes, a rear suspension redesigned with an ITS lowering kit from Vintage V-Dub and a twin-wishbone coilover, multilevel, height-adjustable front suspension from Red 9 Design in the UK.
Purchased by the current owner on March 27, 1986, the Volkswagen was reengineered, painted and reassembled by Calvin Customs of Salina, Kansas, beginning in the winter of 2015 and emerging in the fall of 2020. The upper and interior sections were painted in VW L312 Palm Green, a mid-1950s VW Bus color, while the lower sections and bed were painted with RAL 7002 Olive Gray, matching a late-1950s Porsche Stone Gray. The original steel hoops are ready to be installed for the bed tarp cover, having been painted Olive Gray, and the bed is topped off with sealed hardwood strips. The wheel wells and bottom were likewise treated to high details, with a truck bedliner coating that was tinted Olive Gray as well.
Inside, passengers will love the modern-meets-classic detailing like the Speedhut Revolution tachometer/GPS speedometer combination with high-beam, turn indicators and multi-function screen with separate auxiliary gauges for other readings, a retro-styled radio with a USB charger and cigar lighter, Vintage Air Gen II super air conditioning and heater unit located under the front seat, wood-rimmed steering wheel from Air Cooled Accessories in the UK, a Vintage Speed quick shifter with Porsche-style vibration reducing bushing from Ron Lummus Racing in Anaheim, California, and new window glass, seals, latches and door handles, among other details. Lenny Copp of West Coast Restoration in Fullerton, California, created the seat coverings, which match the original Palm Green used in the Deluxe VW Busses, and the original seats were blasted, painted and reupholstered by Maxwell Bruins of MRestoration Design LLC in Lindsborg, Kansas. Really, it goes on and on for this pickup, because it's all in the details.
