The 1973 Mohs SafariKar is unlike anything else ever put on the road—or off it. A singular fusion of opulence and utility, this extraordinary machine was conceived by the visionary Bruce Mohs, who sought to create the ultimate luxury off-road hunting vehicle. Only three were ever built, and of those, only two were fully completed. One resides permanently in a museum in Illinois, making this the only example available for sale today. It is a genuine, one-of-a-kind automotive treasure, representing both an audacious engineering feat and a captivating piece of history.
Built on the robust chassis of a 1969 International Harvester Travelall 1000D, the SafariKar was designed for adventurers who demanded the best of both worlds: rugged capability and first-class comfort. Beneath the hood, a 392 cubic inch International Harvester V8 engine provides the power, mated to a smooth Borg-Warner three-speed automatic transmission. Power steering and power brakes ensure that this formidable machine remains manageable, whether prowling through the wilderness or cruising down the boulevard.
Visually, the SafariKar defies convention. Its body, constructed from aluminum panels, is entirely wrapped in padded black Naugahyde—a unique and luxurious material choice that provides both sound-dampening and insulation. This distinct exterior, stretched over foam padding and secured with an astonishing 7,000 stainless steel staples, is both a statement of extravagance and a testament to the craftsmanship involved in its construction. The recent restoration required 196 feet of quarter-inch thick, one-inch-wide wooden strips, affixed with 2,700 aluminum rivets, ensuring this rare machine remains as spectacular as the day it was built.
The doors alone set the SafariKar apart from any other vehicle ever produced. Eschewing traditional hinges, they slide outward from the body on four linear rods, allowing for an easier and more dramatic entry and exit. Once inside, the ingenuity of the design becomes even more apparent. Three front-row Baha bucket seats, mounted on custom "Swing & Sway" frames designed by none other than Steve McQueen, provide an unparalleled combination of comfort and stability. The interior features 14 yards of black and red tuxedo carpeting, lending a rich contrast to the vehicle's utilitarian ruggedness. In the rear, a dual-cowl design accommodates two additional jump seats, which fold down for parade use. The rear bench seat folds flat, transforming the vehicle into a functional sleeping platform that comfortably accommodates three people, making it the ideal expedition vehicle for those who seek both adventure and indulgence.
Adding to its grandeur is the manually-operated retractable hardtop, a marvel of engineering that allows the SafariKar to transition from an enclosed hardtop to an open-air cruiser. This dual-cowl, dual-windshield convertible configuration ensures a commanding presence in any setting, while the inclusion of AM/FM and Motorola CB radios provides period-correct communication and entertainment options.
Completing the vehicle's striking appearance are hand-spun aluminum wheel discs, mounted on the original wheels, and complemented by custom whitewall tires. With only 81 miles shown, this SafariKar stands as a near-untouched artifact of automotive eccentricity, a rolling sculpture of ambition and innovation.
With approximately 4,800 hours invested in its restoration, this SafariKar is more than a mere collector's item—it is a legend reborn, an irreplaceable masterpiece that will forever remain a conversation piece in the automotive world. Whether displayed as a crown jewel in a collection or driven as a statement of unmatched exclusivity, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the rarest and most extraordinary vehicles ever created.
